color video assignment.

assignment for my Expanded Cinema Practice class. we had to work with color, and color balancing. this is what i did.

Diana asked me if she could put it on the LCD screens in the stairwell of the East Building; i said yes. it's been playing since last Monday evening.
we critiqued it in class, but i haven't really gotten any feedback besides that.
one student briefly commented on it to me. he said he had talked to some other people about it... he mentioned that other people had a problem with the nudity. my reaction to that: wtf? really? apparently they didn't find it "necessary" .............. something tells me that's probably a more personal comment than anything. anyway, give me feedback here.

my survey answers.

since everyone's letting me in on their answers, i ought to let everyone in on mine. so here you have it.

QUESTION ONE.
When do you find men most sexually attractive?
when they're working on something. especially if they have to take their shirt off to work on it. But seriously.... focused on something important. working with their hands, using tools. playing instruments.
I am most attracted to men when they are attracted to me – eye contact, seeing desire.

QUESTION TWO.
What ass-pecs (aspects) of the male persona turn you on?
I like a man who's driven. who cares about something, could be almost anything, so long as it's important to them and they find purpose in it. talent is sexy. intelligence, knowing a lot about something. the ability to carry a conversation. I love to talk, and I love when guys want to talk with me.
physically, i like shoulders/collarbone/upper-arm area, backs, ass. mouth, eyes. oh, i always enjoy facial hair (but that may just be because i wish I had a beard.)

QUESTION THREE.
Do you generally think of yourself as more sexually dominant, or submissive?
wow, I chose some pretty difficult questions, didn't I? before I became sexually active, but after I became aware of my sexuality, (so, about ages 13-15), I was sure I'd be the dominant one. but after being in a sexual relationship where we took things a little beyond just dom/sub, I realized complete control isn't something I really like. and I do enjoy being dominated, quite a bit... Oh, i'd say I go back and forth between dom/sub. I like a good struggle anyway.

QUESTION FOUR.
When do you feel sexiest?
when i'm wearing matching underwear and high heels. get dolled up for a night out. when my hair cooperates. at parties. smoking cigarettes. when i'm horny.

QUESTION FIVE.
When do men make you feel sexiest?
when they want me. eye contact across a room. when I can see the struggle on their face. and of course, that point when they can't not kiss me.

QUESTION SIXTY-NIIIINE.
Do you ever look at pornography? If so, what kinds?
I rarely use it as a masturbation aid. I don't like putting the effort in to finding video pornography that shows me something I haven't seen before... seems like it's usually the same routine, that's boring. and it's hard for me to find porn that's not oriented towards men – and I have yet to see a guy in porn that i'm actually attracted to.
nude & fetishistic photography work better for me. or, apparently like many women, girl on girl....

QUESTION SEVEN.
Can you give me an example of men being sexually objectified?
well hopefully, by the time this project is over, I will.......

1. sexiest to me:
hairy brooklyn tattoo guy. not because he has a lot of body hair... he does have a lot, doesn't he? I don't care about that part, though. no, the reason that photo is sexiest to me is his face, for several reasons. one, because it is partially obscured, and the way his arm frames it... I don't know, for some reason that's sexy. two, because of the expression on his face.. he looks like he's enjoying something. three, because his face reminds me of someone I used to sleep with who I found incredibly sexy (nothing beyond that really worked though.)
Rob Pattinson and apple eater tie for a very close second. (I like scruffy disheveled-yet-wearing-a-tie and smoking a cigarette kinda guys.. And apple dude's eye contact/awesome upper torso).

2. least sexy to me:
firefighter. I would go for the gross emo boy before that firefighter. there IS such a thing as too muscular. i'd rather see a dirty, sweaty, real firefighter.

3. oh my god. they all objectify men. this is hard. the dad, obviously, is being used, but not sexually... so not that one.... Rob Pattinson is an excellent example of the way I think men are objectified (I am mainly a Twilight fan to see shirtless supernatural men, ain't gonna lie.) But of course, the firefighter is blatantly meant to be viewed in a sexual way – so that one wins.

Now you Know.

cortney andrews

today we were quite fortunate to have Cortney Andrews visit the department. Cortney graduated from KCAI with a BFA in photography in 2005 and got her MFA at RISD in 2007. she currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

i had seen her work before, particularly Eros & Thanatos on the ARTwall in Power & Light:

& also on i heart photograph. but this was my first time seeing a lot of her work all at once, and my first time hearing her talk about it.

here's some notes i took while she was talking:

[on the subject of hiding her face in much of her recent work] with the face it's too specific... acknowledges & denies the viewer's desire to see what is hidden... denying certain parts, revealing as much as possible, but leaving it to their [the viewer's] imagination what's real and what's not.
changing wigs and costumes - constantly shaping identity. contradictions, multiple narratives [in her work]
showing the subject's need & desire to be looked at ... the lover attempting to be the beloved.

re-creating, re-staging, re-claiming nudes by being the female subject.

in each image, she is performing.. for a camera. thinking about performing for people in a space instead.
video- like making photos move. but they're two different things. Video is more like one complete thing - photos build on each other.
video -let the camera go.

don't put full videos on the internet.

i don't know if these notes mean anything to anybody besides me. but there they are..

here's some more images from Cortney Andrews.

and of course you can see more at cortneyandrews.com

there are some pretty obvious similarities between her work and mine. she uses herself as her main model. she creates alternative identities for herself. she creates false realities. female nudes. concealing the face. that's just a few obvious things.

austin and i were also able to talk to cortney about the work we did together with the Manhattan Project, and i hope to be able to talk with her further through emails.

another thing she mentioned was that her recent work is often somewhat fetishistic - showing just limbs, hair, of women.
it's a pretty big coincidence that the other day i took this image of myself, all limbs and hair -

i have more from that afternoon, i may post later.

class outside.

on wednesday, the juniors didn't have class with patrick, so we decided to have our own class. outside.

i was very happy to be outside.

(seriously. weather greatly affects my mood. i am so happy that we have a sun again.)

but i was also very happy that we decided to have class, even though we didn't have to, even though no one directed us through discussion. and we still discussed. i think it was extremely successful, i felt like i learned more about everyone's work than i have this entire semester in that morning.
i don't know what i would do without my class. Anna Vining, Austin Buckingham, Brandon Frederick, CJ Schrat, Colin Burke, Cory Hinesley, Helio Leon, Jason Comotto, Justin Teel, Tweetie Foster. fantastic people, fantastic ideas. and my god. i am so glad you all care.
what's the point in doing anything if you don't care about it?
